Depression isn’t just sadness. Often, it is the exhaustion of carrying too much for too long.
When you have spent years operating in high-stakes environments, performing absolute strength, or editing yourself down to fit into restrictive roles, your system eventually hits a wall. True depression rarely looks like crying; more often, it feels like a heavy stillness, a profound numbness, or an internal engine that has completely run out of fuel.
Your body and mind have gone into a protective shutdown. When the strategies you used to survive—over-functioning, translating your experience for others, or ignoring your own boundaries—can no longer keep up with the weight of your environment, your system flips the switch to "freeze."
This state is often deeply intertwined with unexamined grief. You may be mourning a loved one, but you may also be quietly grieving a version of yourself you had to leave behind, a relationship structure that dissolved, or a faith community or family network that could not hold the full truth of who you are.
Therapy here is a collaborative, paced process led by Philip A. Bower, LICSW. We don't pathologize your low energy or treat your shutdown as a personal failure. Instead, we look honestly at the losses and conditioning underneath the numbness, helping your system safely thaw, restore self-trust, and build a life of genuine choice and connection.
What We Navigate and Integrate Together
We structure our individual sessions to meet you exactly where your energy level is, focusing on:
The Systemic Freeze State: Safely unwinding the heavy, unmotivated fog of depression by identifying the old armor and survival strategies that are ready to be honorably retired.
Complicated & Disenfranchised Grief: Making room for the untidy, non-linear sorrow of physical losses, as well as the unvoiced grief of lost identities, career shifts, and family estrangements.
Religious, Military, or Familial De-Conditioning: Healing from the crushing internal shame and depressive weight that occurs when you choose to live a life that leaves the expectations of your past behind.
Relational Transitions: Navigating the complex emotional undercurrents, boundary shifts, and adjustments within alternative relationship structures, polyamorous dynamics, or life milestones.
Practice Fees & Structural Parameters
To preserve a secure, predictable container for your clinical work, our operational policies remain fully transparent:
Fees & Duration: Individual private-pay intake appointments are $250. Standard ongoing individual sessions are $200 (53 minutes). Partner platform pathways vary in eligibility and billing structures by state.
Evaluations Exclusions: Our focus is entirely therapeutic. We do not provide standalone psychological testing, court-ordered evaluations, custody documentation, or third-party assessments for legal disputes, FMLA, or short-term disability leave unless agreed upon in writing prior to starting care.
Come as You Are—Armor Optional
You do not need to perform strength, clarify your story, or find the perfect words before you step into therapy here. The unedited, exhausted version of your life is fully welcome.
Administrative Notice: Cal.com is an administrative scheduling request tool only. Submitting an inquiry does not guarantee availability or establish an active therapeutic relationship. A clinical relationship is formalized only after verifying mutual clinical fit, verifying your presence within our licensed states (MA, ME, WA), and completing all required portal intake documentation.
